Chapter 98: The DNA Test (3)
Lu Jijun’s voice echoed around the room, and his eyes brimmed with a look of tenderness that Qin Lili had never seen before.
His voice was also gentle like a breeze rustling through the leaves.
“She waited for him, but he never returned. Then one day, she received the news of your father’s demise. Back then, I urged your mother to abort the child or to marry me. I promised her that I would treat the child like my own, but your mother refused. One morning, she left without a word and returned to Jiameng Town, her hometown, where she gave birth to you. Shortly after giving birth, she wrote me a letter, where she mentioned that she had dreamt of your father. He was standing in the snow by himself and lamented to her about how cold he felt. She told me that she wanted to look for him.”
Tears welled up in Lu Jijun’s eyes at the thought of that letter, which was his last correspondence with Ye Linlang.
“As your mother included your address in the letter, I came to find you and your grandmother. Everyone assumed that I was your father when I enquired about you and your grandmother in town. I should have corrected them, but I didn’t, for I was willing to marry your mother if she couldn’t find your father. I planned to take you and your grandmother along as well so that we could all live together.”
Lu Jijun then paused and wiped the tears off his eyes.
“There has been no news from your mother since then. I’ve asked many people for help to obtain news about her, but all I heard was that a woman had fallen into an ice lake at Mohe and that her body was never recovered. I wondered if it could be your mother, but I never had the courage to verify it. Sometimes I’d like to think that some kind stranger had saved her and that she’s still alive somewhere in the world. She could be leading a good life and might return home someday.”
Lu Jijun was overwhelmed with grief at the mere mention of the woman whom he loved with all his heart.
He then looked up at Ye Tianxin and emphasized, “Tianxin, I promised your mother that I would treat you like my own daughter. I’ll take care of you and your grandmother.”
Based on Lu Jijun’s explanation, he sounded like a devoted man. However, Ye Tianxin shook her head and turned him down, “That’s not necessary. Since I’m not your daughter, please stop interfering with my life from now on.”
While Li Qingcang’s intense gaze had not left Lu Jijun, Lu Jijun clenched his fists and continued to urge softly, “Tianxin, you can’t date a rich man. I don’t want you to follow your mother’s footsteps.”
“We’re not dating,” Li Qingcang interrupted. ‘Seems like Lu Jijun really likes to assume things. It’s becoming a habit. How could he be so terribly mistaken about my relationship with Tianxin? I only want to take care of her,’ Li Qingcang mused.
Lu Jijun then muttered, “You’re not dating now. But could you guarantee that you won’t pursue Ye Tianxin in the future?”
“That’s none of your business. I’m free to date whoever I want, Mr. Lu,” Ye Tianxin answered before Li Qingcang could respond. ‘These are my private affairs, and I don’t need others to tell me what to do,’ she thought.
“Tianxin, I’m doing this for your own good. Your mother was in despair because she dated a rich man. I don’t want to see you making the same mistake. A rich man could ditch you any time he wants. Would you be able to put up with a miserably hopeless life like that of your mother’s after he’s done with you?” Lu Jijun fired away.
Ye Tianxin flashed him a small smile and reiterated, “I am not my mother. She lived for love. I don’t.”
Ye Tianxin knew that she was nothing like her mother, and she would not abandon her child and mother for a man.
“Alright. We’re done talking about my affairs. We should move on to Madam Qin now,” she suggested.
